Note: It is best to fill your gas tank before leaving the Interstate 5 area and heading for Platina. Gas is available at the Platina Store but the store is only open short hours and the price is significantly higher than in Redding or Red Bluff.
The fastest way to come from the Bay Area is to take I-80 East, and in Vacaville to take the I-505 cutoff in the direction of Redding. This will bring you to I-5 North just south of Dunnigan. At Red Bluff (over 80 miles from Dunnigan) take the Adobe Road exit, Exit 650, (the 3rd Red Bluff exit off the highway) and follow the signs for Route 36 West, turning left at the signal lights at the end of the exit. At the signal light at the next regular street, turn right. As you pass a defunct car dealership on your right, you will see a sign for a left turn for Highway 36 and Platina. Take that left and continue about 40 miles.
The last three miles are up a long, winding hill, at the top of which is a road to the right and a sign that says “Redding.” However, turn left onto the dirt road (Beegum Gorge Road) directly opposite the road to Redding. If you reach the Platina Store, you have missed the turn. The monastery is 1 3/4 miles up Beegum Gorge Road on the left. The road is unpaved and rough. After winter snowfalls a four-wheel-drive vehicle and/or chains may be required.
If you are coming from the North: From Interstate 5, nine miles south of Redding, you will pass the town of Anderson. Take the Bowman Road exit, Exit 662. Turn right onto Bowman road (also called Tehama County Route A5). Continue about 16 miles until Bowman Road ends at Route 36. Turn right onto Route 36, heading towards Platina (26 miles). Follow the directions in the previous paragraph.
You can take the Greyhound bus to Redding. Let us know when you are coming so we can arrange to pick you up. It takes about an hour and a quarter to drive from the bus station to the monastery.
You can take an Amtrak train to Redding, but the train arrives in the middle of the night and is seldom on time.
Amtrak does have its own bus routes to Redding and they arrive during the daytime.
If you arrive in the middle of the night by train, please make arrangements to spend the night in Redding and we can pick you up later during the day.
The closest airport is the Redding Airport. If it is not possible to fly to Redding, the next best is Sacramento, about three hours by car from the monastery.
