On Tuesday, April 8/21, 2015, we celebrated Radonitsa, “the Day of Rejoicing.” On this day, which always falls on the Tuesday of St. Thomas Week, the dead are commemorated, and the joy of the recent Feast of Pascha, the Resurrection of Christ, is shared between the living and the reposed.
On this day we were blessed with the visit of Hieromonk Innocent, superior of the Monastery of St. John in Manton, California. Fr. Innocent celebrated the Liturgy with us, after which we all went to our monastery cemetery for a Pannikhida (memorial service). At the completion of the Pannikhida, according to tradition we ate Paschal foods together in the cemetery, sprinkling Paschal eggshells on the graves as a sign of our Lord’s Resurrection and of the future General Resurrection.
